2005
marks the 10th Anniversary for the Dick Beardsley Half Marathon. Look
for plenty of extras! For starts, Minnesota's own Carrie Tollefson, as
well as Don Kardong will be guest runners and speakers.
Tollefson won 13 Minnesota high school championships in cross
country/track, setting a national high school record for five individual
titles in cross country. Among her accomplishments is advancing to the
semi-finals in the 1500 in the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Tollefson lives
and trains in the Twin Cities.
Don Kardong finished 4th in the marathon in the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
He is a founding member of the Association of Road Racing Athletes, a
published author and founder of the Lilac Bloomsday Run in Spokane,
Washington. Kardong will pack his sense of humor and share it Friday
night, September 9 at the program following the spaghetti feed.
Dick Beardsley lives in Detroit Lakes. His record time at Grandma's
Marathon still stands after more than 20 years. Beardsley placed second
on the heels of Salazar in the 1982 Boston Marathon. He is a two-time
Olympic Trials Marathon qualifier and the second fastest American born
man in the marathon. Besides running the roads around Detroit Lakes,
Beardsley is an experienced fishing guide and accomplished speaker.
Join us in Detroit Lakes on Friday, September 9 from 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
for the annual spaghetti feed at the Holmes Ballroom, followed by the
speaking program featuring these long distance running greats. Then come
out Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m., September 10 and meet new friends and
