Fishing · Brad Laabs Fishing Report - May 20, 2010

What a great opener for the Detroit Lakes area.

The weather has been fantastic and fish are biting.

I found walleye success on Otter Tail Lake in 22-26ft of water. The walleyes on area lakes are either in the cabbage weeds or off the outside edge in deeper water adjacent to large flats. They will move shallow over the next week as they follow the shiner minnows in shallow as they prepare to spawn. Rigs/jigs and shiners have been the best baits. Pelican, Otter Tail, Big Detroit, and Big Pine have all been good since opener.

Crappies have been active on Mellissa, Cotton and Cormorant. The Crappies have moved back to shallow water now that the water temps have climbed back into the low 60"s. They are getting close to spawning time. Small jigs/hooks tipped with crappie minnow/fatheads fished under a bobber has been working. Fish for Crappies and Sunfish close to edge of the emerging weed growth in warmer shallow water.
